Entire Human Genome Now Available on One Chip
The Boston University Microarray Resource has purchased the newly released GeneChip Scanner 3000 from Affymetrix. The scanner has greatly improved resolution, allowing it to read the new generation of 11-micron feature GeneChips. The scanner also has an autoloader and barcode reader for improved efficiency and data tracking.
The list of GeneChips that take advantage of the higher resolution scanner is growing rapidly and presently includes:
Human U133 2.0 plus
All genes and ESTs represented on the U133A and B chips plus an additional 6,500 new genes
Human U133A 2.0
Mouse U430 2.0
All genes and ESTs represented on the Mouse 430A and B chips
Mouse U430A 2.0
Canis familiaris

Many of these new arrays -- which are newer versions of existing Affymetrix arrays that can only be read on the new high resolution scanner -- are available at a reduced cost per gene. This is a result of moving from 18-micron to 11-micron features: allowing for an approximately 2.7-fold increase in feature density and decreased manufacturing costs. These cost savings have the potential of lowering per sample costs by 18 - 35%.
